Galle is the most important city on Sri Lanka's south coast. Its old town, a UNESCO world heritage site, is built on a promontory and surrounded by historical Dutch fortifications. The impressive battlements, in total more than three kilometres in length, were built from granite and coral around 350 years ago.

Sigiriya Rock Fortress

Visitors can make the 200 metre ascent to the fortress in Sigiriya by climbing a large staircase carved into the rock. A word of advice: the climb is quite steep and strenuous. When you reach the top, you will enjoy beautiful views of the Sri Lankan bush.
